Polarworld - discover beautiful polar booksFace to Face: Ocean Portraits by Huw Lewis-Jones
Reviews and customer comments for Face to Face: Ocean Portraits
‘One of the year's best photography books.’ - The Guardian
‘...a lavish 300-page tale of adventure and derring-do on and in the deep blue seas (and the follow-up to last year's equally bounteous Polar Portraits)...a truly magnificent book.’ - Sport Magazine
‘...not only a document of pioneering ocean photography but also a collection of absorbing portraits of those who have dedicated their lives to the sea...A wealth of information and imagery for keen photographers and history buffs alike.’ - Outdoor Photography
‘…the overall theme is ‘Ocean Portraits’ and that theme has been interpreted as widely as possible. Images include the ancient as well as the modern. The portrait of an eye of a humpback whale is preceded by a sailor from 1917 and followed by a montage of 16 images, which include shoaling barracuda, a windsurfer, a deep-sea diver in hard hat and the crew of the submarine Resurgam in 1879. I particularly like the image of the US sailing ship `Granite State' aground on the Runnelstone in 1877 complete with seven well-dressed Victorian adults and three children viewing the wreck from nearby cliffs. Elsewhere, and by complete contrast, one can almost feel the excitement of the crew of a racing yacht fighting the elements to recover a sail whilst underway…I am often accused of being very harsh with my reviews and, perhaps occasionally, I am. Nothing, however, gives me greater pleasure than to publish a glowing assessment of any book complete with a full 5 Star rating and yet this book is worth so much more. This book is a delight. This book is a pleasure to hold and study. This book will show all photographers the way forward and gives us all the impetus to improve our skills. This book is a triumph on all fronts. This book will be studied time and again and will always provide the reader with yet something new that was not notice before. In a word, this book is `Outstanding!' If you are truly hunting for an excellent present for the photographer in your life - here it is!’ - Ned Middleton, Amazon UK
